National Institute of Open
Schooling (NIOS)
The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) was established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, in 1989 to provide education to remote areas. Its goal is to increase literacy and promote flexible learning. Through NIOS, children can study without attending regular school.
NIOS is a national board that conducts Secondary and Senior Secondary examinations for open schooling, similar to CBSE and CISCE, to support literacy and education in rural areas.
NIOS collaborates with the Commonwealth of Learning (COL) and UNESCO.
